Kanoko Shibori Haori Jacket
Japan
Shōwa Period
c. 1950s–1970s
A short, multi-hued haori jacket with an all-over kanoko shibori pattern. The design is formed from dense repeated square-dot shapes, creating a mottled geometric surface across the body, sleeves and collar.
Kanoko / Fawn Spot - Tiny square-dot forms imitating the spotted pattern of a young deer. In kimono textiles, kanoko is strongly associated with shibori work.
Haori were worn as outer jackets over kimono, adding warmth, polish and personal style. This example uses kanoko shibori, a labour-intensive resist-dye technique where small sections of cloth are bound before dyeing to form tiny repeated spots.
